While Pinocchio is more outwardly puppet-like in del Toro's vision, he nevertheless is human through his connections and emotions, as emphasized by how Pinocchio isn't turned human in the film's conclusion. Similar to del Toro's previous work in The Shape of Water, he challenges perceptions of what defines humanity through the titular puppet's hasty, wooden design by a grieving, drunken Gepetto (voiced by David Bradley). While del Toro's designs may stray from the typical visuals associated with Pinocchio, the director's innovation for his characters is still some of the most heartfelt representations of the story put to screen. ![]()
